We are delighted to share that Bob Shen, a student in the Bachelor of Arts and Sciences in Global Health and Development Programme [BASc(GHD)], has been selected as an HKU Laidlaw Scholar for 2025–26.

The Laidlaw Scholars Programme equips students with research and leadership skills to help them pursue their academic and professional aspirations beyond their current course of study.

Under this programme, Bob will investigate climate-driven health risks in his research project. 📈

It was great to catch up with one of our first cohort of BASc(GHD) graduates in London and hear all about his exciting job. Cole Chiu graduated in 2023 and is now working as a Policy and Data Officer at Solar Energy UK. He contributes to the UK solar industry through coordinated policy work and industry engagement.

Gyneth Mok, a Year 2 BASc(GHD) student, had the chance to facilitate the side event of the 79th World Health Assembly (WHA) last month in Geneva, Switzerland. The event was hosted by GX Foundation and she joined as a Youth Ambassador of the foundation.

The side event, titled “Keep It Simple — No Mosquito, No Dengue”, advocated for the use of physical interventions, such as mosquito lamps to combat the rise of vector-borne diseases such as dengue. While chemical and biological means of control are widely adopted nowadays, physical means remain less popular but have been proven at GX Foundation’s field projects to be effective, efficient, and affordable. Attendees of the event included health representatives from various countries, as well as experts from the WHO and UN agencies.

Apart from supporting the event, Gyneth gained first-hand exposure to the workings of global health governance and advocacy. She observed that different stakeholders are convened to shape collective action, and that strategic messaging influences global agendas. Most importantly, she found that concepts learned in BASc(GHD) lectures, such as discursive power, agenda-setting, and multi-stakeholder engagement, came to life. For Gyneth, it reinforced the importance of translating knowledge into action, and of finding effective bottom-up solutions in the pursuit of global health.

Sodam Ahn, a Year 4 BASc(GHD) student, completed a six-month field placement with the UN Development Programme - Bureau for Policy and Programme Support in Copenhagen, supporting the Global Fund Partnership and Health Systems Team.

Sodam contributed to two main workstreams—digital and climate-resilient health systems. By supporting the DIGIT initiative, which is a digital public infrastructure platform, she explored how digital tools can strengthen health systems. “It was a valuable learning curve for me to see how data, policy, and technology intersect in real-world development work.”

Alongside this, Sodam was involved in a solar-powered health facility project in the Solomon Islands. The project aims to enhance climate resilience while improving healthcare delivery in remote areas. What struck her most was how digital innovation and renewable energy can come together to strengthen primary health care, especially in countries vulnerable to climate change.

Through this placement, what was the most important was that she experienced the realities of working in international development. She gained a deeper understanding of how ambitions met practical constraints, and how small contributions can support broader global goals.

Jessie Leung, a year 4 BASc(GHD) student, was on placement at HealthServe in Singapore.

For around six months, Jessie rotated across three key departments at HealthServe, a charity offering migrant workers comprehensive health and social care services.

During her rotation at the communications team, Jessie took on the role as a storyteller, developing digital campaigns that highlighted migrant workers' contributions in building Singapore. Eventually, the efforts supported HealthServe’s SG60 Tribute Luncheon at Marina Bay Sands, a large-scale event honouring 400 migrant workers, with the President of Singapore, Mr Tharman Shanmugaratnam as the guest of honour. This experience strengthened her storytelling skills for public engagement.

Moving to the Mental Health and Outreach team, Jessie co-led Peer Support Leader training sessions in worker dormitories, empowering workers to support each other's well-being. She also designed HealthServe's World Mental Health Day booth and created interactive activities to spark dialogue around mental health. The exposure taught her that creating community resilience occurs in small group settings, as well as in larger community-wide events.

Finally, in the Medical Clinic rotation, by supporting patient registration, pharmacy operations, and in assisting doctors and nurses in monthly health screenings, Jessie witnessed the dedication of doctors, nurses, and clinic assistants, thereby affirming her belief that healthcare is more than providing medical services, it is about upholding human dignity.

Year 4 BASc(GHD) student Linus Chung, was on placement at the Hellenic Pasteur Institute, a biomedical research institution in Athens.

During the placement, Linus had the opportunity to attend the BE READY PLUS Final Conference. Representatives from the European Commission, public health institutes, patient associations, NGOs, and research bodies convened to further develop the European partnership for pandemic preparedness and response capacities.

Across two days of presentations and discussions, the conference offered Linus a first-hand look at the complexity of health governance, and the key role civil society had to play in enhancing society’s resilience in face of pandemic.

Linus also had the chance to speak with professionals from WHO, the European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control, and civil society organisations. Through these conversations, Linus learnt that effective health emergency response depends not only on scientific knowledge and policy, but on the ability to turn them into a concrete plan.

Year 4 BASc(GHD) student Kim Minji completed a placement at WWF Hong Kong last year. During her placement, she not only learnt about various conservation work but also grew in the workplace.

A key part of her placement focused on sustainable tourism and public engagement. She had the opportunity to co‑develop social media content linking local biodiversity to different dimensions of health, such as mental well‑being in urban life. She was able to draw on the relevant knowledge she learnt at HKU, which helped her translate technical conservation concepts into accessible and relatable messages for the public. Through this process, she reflected on the importance and meaning of public communication.

Apart from gaining insights into the operations of an environmental organisation, the placement was also beneficial for her personal growth. She learnt to accept constructive feedback, manage small disappointments, and take pride in incremental improvements. Over time, she stopped seeing herself solely as an intern and began to take ownership of project components. She was also glad to see how she had contributed meaningfully to WWF Hong Kong’s projects and campaigns.

Phoo Pwint Khine, Elsa, Year 4 BASc(GHD) student, was on placement at the UNICEF Headquarters in New York— here’s what she experienced.

One of the most memorable parts of her experience was volunteering at the World Polio Day event, where she saw advocates and polio survivors come together in support of a polio-free future. Standing before the historic Smallpox Hospital on Roosevelt Island, New York, listening to inspiring stories from polio survivors, and seeing the coalition of talented individuals unite under a single purpose was a humbling and eye-opening experience.

Working in the Health Emergency Preparedness and Response team, Elsa was able to fully immerse in the operational phase of global health security. The team’s primary objective is to strengthen the ability of communities to withstand and recover from health crises. Through her work drafting briefing notes and observing the collaboration across headquarters and country offices, Elsa gained valuable insight into the extensive coordination and commitment behind global health security projects.

On 29 January 2026, we were excited to celebrate the remarkable achievements of our 17 Year 4 students returning from their placements at the Post-Placement Presentation. This special event brought together esteemed teachers and students from all cohorts.

The presentation was an enlightening experience, with students sharing their insights, learnings, and the impactful work they have accomplished during their placements. Our students had the opportunity to work in various international organizations, including UNICEF in New York, IFRC in Geneva, China CDC in Beijing and Shanghai, and Community Partners International (CPI) in Thailand. It was also fascinating to hear students sharing their unique encounters and discoveries in new cultures.

We are incredibly proud of our students for their hard work and thoughtful presentations. A big thank you to Prof. David Bishai, Prof. Pui Hong Chung, and Dr. Andrew Park for their guidance and support throughout this journey.

BASc(GHD) Year 4 student Adrian Pang’s placement took him to Tsukuba, Japan—a city of education and innovation, here’s what he experienced.

Being placed at the top tier International Institute for Integrative Sleep Medicine (IIIS) was a valuable opportunity for Adrian. Over six months, Adrian was immersed in the rich academic atmosphere at the University of Tsukuba while working closely with his research group at IIIS and the Institute of Medicine.

Adrian was responsible for implementing a prospective matched cohort study on cardiometabolic health progression in narcolepsy patients, using a national database covering inpatient and outpatient insurance claims, dispensing records and medical examination records. Seeing how well Japan’s digital sources integrate, together with the broad coverage of national or employment-based health insurance in Japan, Adrian believed that findings from such studies could inform decision-making and future public health strategies.

In December, he presented his findings alongside postgraduate students and faculty members at the 14th Annual IIIS Symposium. Apart from learning from the keynote lecture by an internationally renowned neurobiologist, Adrian gathered insights at the data blitz session, in which each presenter was given one minute to summarise their project using one presentation slide. It helped him to understand the importance of effective communication in science.

Sleep science remains full of intricacies and unanswered questions, and Adrian was glad to have contributed even a tiny bit to the field during his time at IIIS. Working alongside renowned scholars made him humbler as a researcher and led him to gain insights into research itself – “every project we work on certainly represents a small step forward in science, but it also means that the next step we take will be into the arena of uncertainty and unfamiliarity.”

Carey Chan, Year 4 BASc(GHD) student was on placement at the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC) Emergency Health team in Geneva, here’s what she experienced.

Carey supported the Health Surge Technical Working Group meeting in Oslo, where participants from the fields of public health, clinical care, and Mental Health and Psychosocial Support (MHPSS) across the Red Cross Red Crescent Movement convened to discuss health surge topics, endeavouring to optimize health emergency responses and make them more effective and efficient. She had the opportunity to network and interact with 55 participants and facilitators, learn from their experiences and join in discussions. She even took part in a traditional Norwegian fjord‑swim‑and‑sauna activity and jumped into the cold fjord, as part of the meeting networking session.

Carey also attended the Clinical Emergency Response Unit (ERU) meeting in Geneva, where leaders from different National Societies gathered to discuss the direction and strategies of ERUs. She helped take minutes at the meeting. Though it was challenging, she learnt about the perspectives and difficulties each National Societies face in maintaining health ERUs.

Through these experiences, Carey’s takeaway was that behind each seemingly small response team, there is a massive network supporting the team, which tracks and monitors operations in order to make every mission possible. To attend these meetings and be part of the network was truly eye-opening for Carey. The experience strengthened her determination to contribute to the humanitarian world.

BASc(GHD) alumna Andrea Chan came back to HKU on Monday (Sept 22) to share her experience working in GX Foundation's overseas health projects, along with other current students who had their placements at the non-governmental organisation.

The HKUMed event also featured a talk on Compassion in Medicine and Humanitarian Assistance delivered by Mr Leung Chun-ying, Vice Chairman of the National Committee of the Chinese People’s Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC). Mr Leung is also the Chairman of GX Foundation.

What an inspiring two days with nearly 30 passionate secondary school students! 💡✨

From exploring the BASc(GHD) programme to diving into real-world global health simulations, students stepped into the shoes of decision-makers, making critical decisions and gaining a deeper appreciation for the complexities involved. 🏙️🩺

They especially enjoyed the debriefing sessions—reflecting on global issues such as health equity, climate change, and the impact of disinformation. 🧠🌐

Participants wrapped up with a heartfelt closing ceremony and certificates to celebrate their growth and dedication. 🎉📜

These future changemakers left energised and curious, ready to make a difference in global health. Many expressed a keen interest in exploring the BASc(GHD) programme as a pathway to making a positive impact on the world. 💪🌱
