Yesterday, we were thrilled to celebrate the remarkable achievements of our 22 Year 4 students returning from their placements at the Post-Placement Presentation! This special event brought together not only our GHD students from all cohorts but also esteemed teachers, alumni, family, and friends.

The presentation was an enlightening experience, with students sharing their insights, learnings, and the impactful work they accomplished during their placements. Our students had the opportunity to work in various international organizations, including but not limited to UNICEF in New York, IFRC in Geneva, China CDC in Beijing and Shanghai, and UNDP in São Tomé and Príncipe, located in more than ten cities worldwide. Through their presentations, the students showcased their job duties, unique encounters with new cities and cultures, and the resilience displayed when faced with tough challenges. The faculty members were thoroughly impressed by the students' dedication and the positive contributions they made in their respective fields.

We are incredibly proud of our students for their hard work and resilience. The knowledge and skills they've gained will undoubtedly enrich their future endeavors. A big thank you to Prof. David Bishai, Prof. Pui Hong Chung, and Dr. Andrew Park for their guidance and support throughout this journey.

Winki Cheung, a fourth-year GHD student who recently completed her placement at the China CDC in Beijing. Here’s a glimpse into her valuable experience:

Projects Involved:

1. Global Health Capacity Building: Winki contributed to the development of a curriculum for a global health program, starting in China and potentially extending to Africa. This component emphasizes adaptive learning through simulations and case studies to equip future health professionals with the necessary skills.

2. Malaria Gene Sequencing Courses Platform: With a focus on Africa, Winki reviewed and provided feedback on course content aimed at enhancing the practical ability of public health laboratory staff to conduct malaria molecular surveillance and gene sequencing.

Winki's work aims to train the next generation in the global health field, expanding the global health workforce within China and beyond.

Exploring Heritage: Being based in Beijing allowed Winki to delve into the city's rich history by visiting various monuments and museums. Some notable sites include the Imperial College Museum, the Temple of Heaven, and the Yuanmingyuan (Old Summer Palace).

Samantha Choi, another fourth-year GHD student, is currently on placement at the China CDC in Shanghai.

In mid-October, Samantha and her team traveled to Yueyang, Hunan, to conduct a field inquiry into the prevention and control of schistosomiasis—a disease that has plagued China for over 2,100 years. China aims to eliminate the disease in all endemic areas by 2030.

Day 1: The team visited the Museum of Schistosomiasis Prevention and Control of Hunan Province, learning about efforts since 1953 to control the disease. As of 2023, 22 of the 40 endemic counties in Hunan have met the elimination standards.

Day 2: The team visited rural villages to observe screening tests for elderly residents. Samantha had enlightening conversations, gaining insights into their concerns about schistosomiasis and the broader social issues related to the aging population.

On-Site Investigation: The team conducted an on-site investigation in an endemic area, learning to distinguish Oncomelania snails, the common intermediate host of schistosomiasis. Despite the physical challenges, Samantha felt profound gratitude for the frontline workers.

Key Takeaways: Samantha observed remarkable progress in combating schistosomiasis but noted the dwindling funding for research. She emphasizes the need for sustained investment and global collaboration to continue making strides in public health.

Samantha's journey in Yueyang deepened her understanding of public health challenges and the essential role of collaboration. She is eager to contribute to global health initiatives and ensure health equity for all.

Yixuan Huang, another fourth-year GHD student, is currently on placement at the World Wild Life (WWF) in Hong Kong.

Yixuan focused on the Low Carbon Manufacturing Program (LCMP), where she designed questionnaires, conducted interviews with senior executives, wrote reports, and created informative posters. Her most memorable moment was conducting her first interview with Greenland, where she overcame initial nervousness with the support of her supervisors and teammates. This experience was a significant personal achievement for her.

Cain Lau, another fourth-year GHD student, is currently on placement at the University of Hong Kong-China Medical Board-National Institute of Public Health Project in Phnom Penh.

From day one, Cain was immersed in the heart of public health policy and research in Cambodia. With the new administration aiming for universal health coverage by 2035, Cain’s primary task involved analyzing the new Universal Health Care (UHC) Roadmap 2024-2035, identifying how the Ministry of Health and NIPH can contribute effectively and bridge capacity gaps.

The trust placed in interns at NIPH was remarkable. Cain had the opportunity to draft a grant proposal for vaccine uptake research, competing against teams from over 15 countries. This experience highlighted the high-stakes nature of global health work, beyond the academic setting.
Cain also contributed to a multi-stage mixed-method study on referral systems and gatekeeping policies, creating tools such as cross-sectional surveys and guidelines for qualitative investigations.

Beyond the office, Cain joined a field trip to Siem Reap, witnessing first-hand the challenges and opportunities in rural healthcare delivery. Visiting health centers and the awe-inspiring Angkor Wat provided valuable insights into Cambodia’s healthcare landscape.

Cain observed how resource constraints can hinder public health work but found inspiration in the dedication and passion of NIPH colleagues to improve health outcomes in Cambodia.

Jimmy Hung, another fourth-year GHD student, is currently on placement at the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) - Strategic and Policy Unit in São Tomé and Príncipe.

In the past two months, our BASc(GHD) student, Jimmy, had the precious opportunity to work as a fellow in the Health Team of the UNDP in São Tomé and Príncipe.

This picturesque island nation is known for its rich volcanic soil, beautiful rainforests, and scenic beaches. However, like many island countries, it faces challenges due to climate change and extreme weather.

Jimmy gained first-hand experience in supporting the Ministry of Health with two critical projects: the Digitalization of a Health Information System and the construction of medical laboratories and warehouses. These efforts are vital for improving the healthcare infrastructure and ensuring reliable medical records and services.

A special quote from Jimmy's feedback: "Throughout this journey, I can always discover something interesting and understand more about this country. Most importantly, I have adapted to the new lifestyle here called leve leve (a light and relaxed attitude to life)."

The theme "杏福健康站 - Healthy Living, Healthy Ageing" resonated with the residents and brought the community together for an insightful and fun event.

During this internship, Skyler has the opportunity to work alongside some of the brightest minds in global health, gaining invaluable insights into projects focused on critical issues such as mental health, non-communicable diseases, climate change, and social inclusivity. This experience is helping him refine his interests and strengths, paving the way for a future career dedicated to making a positive impact on global health and development.

Gabriel Sung, a fourth-year GHD student, is currently on placement at the Rizzoli Orthopaedics Institute in Italy, where they are conducting an important study on the genomics relating proteins to osteoarthritis. This research has the potential to significantly enhance our understanding of this common non-communicable disease affecting millions around the globe.

Gabriel shared with us photos of her workplace and with the sculpture of Signor Codivilla, an Italian surgeon from Bologna, and the namesake of this particular building within the Rizzoli Orthopaedics Institute.

Global Health and Development Summer Programme 2024 Recap

With the enthusiastic participation of nearly 30 passionate high school students, this year's programme was an extraordinary learning experience. Here's a glimpse into what transpired:

Participants gained valuable insights into the interdisciplinary Bachelor of Arts and Sciences in Global Health and Development [BASc(GHD)] programme. They explored how this unique curriculum empowers students with a comprehensive understanding of global health challenges from diverse perspectives.

The heart of the programme was the engaging simulation activities, where students assumed different roles in a simulated country. They tackled real-world global health issues, making critical decisions and gaining deeper appreciation for the complexities involved.

The programme concluded with a memorable closing ceremony, where participants were honoured for their dedication and hard work. Each student received a certificate of completion, marking their achievements and growth over the two days.

Throughout the programme, students were inspired to continue nurturing their curiosity and passion for global health. Many expressed a keen interest in exploring the BASc(GHD) programme as a pathway to making a positive impact on the world.

Spotlight on the BASc(GHD) Programme at the University of Hong Kong!

Professor Pui Hong Chung, the BASc(GHD) Programme Director, joined two of our talented students, Vincy Yau (2023 graduate) and Zoe Chan (Year 1), for a media interview to showcase the signature features of this degree.

Professor Chung shared that the programme has 20-30 students annually, with approximately one-third being international. The diverse teaching team is composed of faculty members from the US, Australia, and Southeast Asia.

A key highlight is the 6-month placement, where students gain hands-on experience at UN agencies, NGOs, and charitable foundations. Vincy, who interned at UNICEF New York, explained how the programme's interdisciplinary nature equipped her to better collaborate with colleagues from various academic backgrounds.

As a first-year student, Zoe also shared her enriching experience, including opportunities to engage with the wider Faculty of Medicine community through student society activities.

The following is the sharing from Elsa, Year 2 BASc(GHD) student from Myanmar, the another Belt and Road Scholar.

"Now going into my second year as a BASc (GHD) student, I, as a humble recipient of the Belt & Road Scholarship (Myanmar), am truly grateful for the generous and continued support by the university and scholarship donors. In my quest to pursue a career in the health sector on an international scale, this scholarship played a significant role in enabling me to pursue my higher education as non-local student studying at HKU and opening up a world of opportunities for me.

My goal is to work towards the advancement of health policies and practices on a global scale to address critical development issues and promoting equitable access to healthcare for all, applying new concepts I’ve learnt to personal experiences I’ve faced back at home and learning from different cases all around the world. Additionally, I am also determined to do a second major in Bachelor of Science in Food and Nutritional Science, with a focus on food security studies - a program which I believe will compliment and further enrich my dreams to work with non-governmental organizations and pursuing a master’s degree in Public Health. This advancement towards my goals would not be possible without this scholarship.

With the scholarship, I maximized academic opportunities and engaged with the community. As an executive committee member of the Global Health and Development Society and member of various other societies, I actively participate in and organize extracurricular activities. I also represent Myanmar students at HKU through scholarship sharing sessions, encouraging future students from Myanmar to pursue academic opportunities in Hong Kong. Furthermore, I gained practical skills and community involvement through a summer internship at a local company.

The Belt and Road Scholarship has not only enabled me to extend support and guidance to others but also allows me to focus on my studies and pursue my passions while alleviating the financial burden on my family and for that, I am forever grateful.

The Belt and Road Scholarship programme, which was launched in the 2016-17 academic year, has awarded scholarships to over 430 students from 39 countries. It aims to attract global talent and foster international cooperation. 🌍✈️

The following is the sharing from Harseni, Year 2 BASc(GHD) student from Sri Lanka.

"If someone told me, three years ago, that I would get a scholarship to one of the most prestigious universities in the world, I would not have believed them. Due to financial reasons, going overseas for my undergraduate studies was out of the question for me. Yet here I am today— studying BASc in Global Health and Development at HKU— on the path to improve and foster future healthcare systems and polices. I would not be where I am today if it weren’t for the Belt and Road Scholarship. Not only has it widened my horizons, but it has also pushed me to reach my fullest potential.

The belt and road Scholarship has helped me gain a shift in perspective, both academically and culturally. I have met doctors and visited hospitals in Hong Kong that follow a different health-system to what I grew up in. Each course and opportunity given by the GHD programme opens a window into a new world more complex and dynamic than the last. And doing this along with like-minded peers makes it more valuable. I am looking forward to my placement next year, and to continue learning and growing!

Coming to Hong Kong to do my dream degree has put in a place more far-reaching than what I imagined for myself. This would not have been possible if it weren’t for the Belt and Road Scholarship, and for that I am eternally grateful.
